Karen holds a B.S. in ocean engineering from Purdue University, W. Lafayette and an M.S. in ocean engineering from the Johns Hopkins University. She worked for over 14 years at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory designing sensor systems for the Navy and Department of Defense. She began keeping bees about 8 years ago, inspired by watching her Russian grandfather manage colonies in his backyard (and eating the honey) while she was growing up. While keeping bees, she met Dr. Jeff Pettis and began working with him in 2010 to manage and conduct the APHIS National Honey Bee Survey. The Bee Informed Partnership was awarded a 5-year USDA National Institutes of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) grant in 2011 and she gladly accepted the exciting job of Project Manager under Dr. Dennis vanEngelsdorp. Working at the University of Maryland, she enjoys helping bridge the gap between the academic scientific community and the beekeepers to reduce colony losses. She still enjoys eating honey.
